PRION

WHAT is A PRION??    and,   HOW DOES IT AFFECT ME??

WANT THE BOTTOM LINE??
Why not!!!!   -   Well, here it is.  (I always read the last chapter first - so the facts that follow can only be summarized in this way - and don't say I didn't say that it was not important!!) This topic is so vital, that it affects us all - anyone who really understands what a prion is - how hard they are to destroy - how they are now in our environment - and, hence our food chain.....     will    PROBABLY BECAME A VEGAN!!!

"Prions are simply proteins, not living organisms, and they can survive almost anything, even hundreds of degrees of heat. Placing infected tissue in a landfill simply removes it, but scientists worry that the prions can leach through soil and groundwater, and spread.
Incineration is possible, but it isn't as easy as burning the carcass in a fire. Temperatures of more than 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit — sometimes up to 1,800 degrees — are required to effectively neutralize prions. Unlike most bacteria, regular cooking won't help at all."

Now, some of the details:

PRION

A prion in the Scrapie form (PrPSc) i/  is an infectious agent composed of protein in a misfolded form.  (prion – Google).
Another definition:   Prion: A small proteinaceous infectious disease-causing agent that is believed to be the smallest infectious particle. A prion is neither bacterial nor fungal nor viral and contains no genetic material. Prions have been held responsible for a number of degenerative brain diseases, including mad cow disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, fatal familial insomnia, kuru, and an unusual form of hereditary dementia known as Gertsmann-Straeussler-Scheinker disease.   (Med.  dict.)

Prions were discovered when investigating why cannibals died sooner……….

The bottom line , for me, was to discover that anyone who REALLY understands prions, often becomes a VEGAN – and wonders why they did not do it sooner!!  (if not a vegan, a vegetarian, Or, if eating meat – to choose from the old classic of  ‘clean meat’).’

Symptoms and pathology of mad cow disease
Mad cow disease is a fatal condition affecting the nervous system of cattle. In an affected animal, the brain develops tiny holes. The animal loses control over its movements and its behaviour changes – so it seems mad.
The tiny holes in the brain are areas where brain cells have degenerated or died. Because of all these holes, the brain of an animal with mad cow disease looks like a sponge – hence the clinical name of the disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
The first diagnosis was in 1986
It is very similar to scrapie, a well-known disease in sheep that has been recorded for more than 200 years.      Scrapie is also a spongiform encephalopathy and is always fatal.
Why did mad cow disease suddenly appear?
Mad cow disease started in Britain after cattle were fed meat-and-bone meal, a protein supplement made from offal from cattle and sheep. This practice had been going on for some time before BSE appeared, but in the early 1980s the way in which offal was processed changed – the high temperatures and the quantities of chemical solvents used to sterilise the material were reduced slightly. This may have allowed the disease agent, which is very resistant to all forms of sterilisation, to survive.

Kuru – a human disease with similar symptoms and a similar cause
In 1957, D. Carleton Gajdusek (United States National Institutes of Health) and Vincent Zigas (Australian Public Health Service) described a strange disease among the Fore highlanders of Papua New Guinea. Victims of the condition showed a gradual loss of coordination, which progressed to complete motor incapacity and death. The course of the disease lasted 12 months on average and was always fatal. It affected all ages and both sexes, but it was most common in adult women.

Summarises the research of Baruch Blumberg and Carleton Gajdusek that won the Nobel prize. (Nobelprize.org, Sweden)
Smart scientific detective work showed that the disease, called kuru, was caused by something that was passed on during ritual endocannibalism, when the brains of recently deceased people were eaten. This work involved inoculating chimpanzees with material from the brains of people who had died of kuru and was carried out by Caleton Gajdusek and his colleagues Joseph Gibbs and Michael Alpers. In 1976, Dr Gajdusek was awarded a Nobel prize for his work on kuru. Solving the puzzle of kuru also required detailed knowledge of the epidemiology of the disease and the mortuary practices and social behaviour of the Fore people.
Kuru began to disappear from Papua New Guinea after cannibalism was outlawed. However, it has not yet gone altogether: Remarkably, a few cases are still occurring in the early 2000s with incubation periods of up to 50 years. (ref: - Google..)
There is much more information on the net  -  just look up  ‘prion’’

There are some good books on the topic:   e.g.:

While you are at Amazon, look at the list of books……..  (Also, type any topic into the search bar – they have some really cool stuff………..)

You probably read this on some sort of computing device:
Such things need maintenance.  There is a totally inappropriate sexist joke, in some quarters, about a little old 'person'' who wondered why the car would not go. When asked about when maintenance was last done -"What is that?"                  .............................................
Personal experience:
Yes, I lost my most precious photos. Because I did not have them copied, or backed up.
I now have them, (what I have left!!), copied, and backed up - I used:
Please back-up your precious documents - don't loose them, like I did.
And, please tell a friend - may save their .........
(The way it happened, wasn't even someone hacking! Some computer "tech" was eliminating some old files from my computer - to help it run faster. Bingo!! Photos gone!!!)
Concerning hacking.....
Did you know that there are now more than 220,000 new attempts to interfere with computers, created every day. Most are destroyed pretty quickly. BUT>>>>>>>>>    NOT all of them
Made me rethink my computer protection.
It is now, not a question of "ïf" they will take out my computer, it is a question of "when".........
So, I now use, and I recommend for you:
